Are You Listening...

Updated: Oct 10, 2020

Are you listening... to audio books that is? After I finished my graduate program I thought I would have a lot more time to read. I love reading and strongly believe the statement that, "readers are leaders". There was only one problem, I didn't have as much free time as I thought I would have. I watched my amazon cart continue to fill up with books that I was hoping to get to some day, but deep down inside I knew that I probably would never get to them all.

Then one day my wife told me about a book she had just listened to on audible and the light bulb went off, this is how I can get through all the books I want to read. A little disclaimer, I still think reading a book is a little better than listening to a book. You tend to have less distractions when you read, therefore allowing you to absorb more. With that said I would encourage you to take advantage of audible. Here is why:

  1. Maximize your time in the car: Our time in our cars is unique. There isn't much we can do, but we can listen. Before I started listening to audio books I would listen to sports radio. I can assure you that there is very little sustenance coming from local sports radio. This is one of the only places where I can give the book I'm listening to a good amount of attention. It is quiet and I am usually alone. This is a great space to learn.

  2. Learn while you workout: At the top of the list of things we nee to do is taking care of our bodies and our minds. I love listening to audible at the gym because I get to do both. A little pro tip that I have learned is to listen to books about motivating things when working out. It can be a tool to help you finish instead of giving up.

  3. It's usually faster than reading: I'm a slow reader. While getting my masters degree I learned how to read fast, but now that I don't have to write a paper about my reading I have reverted back to reading slowly. This isn't a bad thing, but it does keep me form getting through as many books as I desire. Listening to audio books is a faster way for me to listen to the books that I will help me grow.

So, are you listening? You should get audible if you don't already have it. The cool thing is when you sign up they give you two free books to get started. Click the link below and start listening.
